Late Shri Madhavrao Gangadhar Shende (1918-2005) was a music teacher and singer specialized in Hindustani (North Indian) Classical Music. He grew up in rural area in the small village called Rahimatpur of western India not far from Western Ghats and river Krishna . His passion for music overtook the traditional need for formal school-education. He did not run after fame and recognition. His life was like a flagrant flower in the jungle.

Madhavrao Shende’s life can best be described similar to such flower- silent, happy, making those around him in the jungle happy. Above all he enjoyed every moment of the existence. His life cannot be measured in terms of wealth he left behind and popularity of his music but by the memories he left behind and deeper thoughts he inspired on the real meaning of the life. His elder brother Sitaram , popularly known as Bapusaheb was instrumental in channeling and nurturing his passion.

Vedas originated in ambiance and backdrop of nature. The two fundamental elements of Indian Classical Music are ‘Raga’ (based on swara or notes) and Tala (rhythm) all of which are related to nature and even named after seasons, time, flora and fauna. Like Vedas, Indian classical music gives supernatural experience and takes listener to the meditation state of reflection , exudes joy and sorrow.

There are four Vedas – the Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva Vedas. It is the Sama Veda that is said to lay the basis for Indian classical music. The Sama Veda consists mainly of hymns, mantras and poetic texts, which were chanted during Vedic rituals using three to seven notes, sometimes with an instrumental accompaniment.
